What have you learned and/or re-learned in the last 4 weeks of our sessions?
This speech class has actually taught me a lot. Although I am not necessarily a person who likes to do public speeches, I have learned many great tips from the class. So far I learned how to prepare myself for speeches, why I should dress appropriately and what to do while presenting. You would think that most of the things that we went over in class are common sense, but people tend to forget that. For example, we went over how you should not talk while someone else is presenting or do anything distracting. I learned how to give an effective speech, especially watching all the sample presentations from last year. I also relearned that you should use your visual aid during your presentation because it has many benefits for you as well as for the audience. A concept that I learned in class that is really important, is how to work as team. Communication is important, and I believe we went over how to be successful the first week of class. We also learned the body of a speech/essay. It should be the introduction, 3 bodies and the conclusion, similar to the video we watched on YouTube that used the burger as an example, you wrap up everything in the end. A very important principle that we learned is how to prevent plagiarism and what plagiarism is, because some people might be plagiarizing without realizing it.
Have your learning techniques, time management, and learning attitude been effective in this course?
I want to say that my learning techniques have been helpful. I have always been good with time management, especially for this semester, I made a goal for myself. I told myself that I will start all my assignments at least a week before they are due and it has been going really well so far. As for my learning attitude, I think it has been effective for this class too. I try to stay concentrated and interested most of the time and I want to participate in class too.
Reflect and discuss how each of the following factors enabled you to learn (or hindered you from learning).
a. Course materials
b. Learning activities and Assignments
c. Instructor’s teaching style and approach
d. Your own attitude, study and work ethics
a. I think the course material is really helpful, because it goes over the things that we as students may forget. The class gives you many great tips and advices on how to deliver a great speech. Plagiarism is something every student should know about, and I think it is good that we always go over it in class, because it emphasized how important it is to not plagiarize and what to do to avoid it.
b. I think the learning activities are great, even though I hate delivering speeches. Having a speech every Friday is helpful, because practice makes perfect. Every time I deliver a speech, it helps me to get over my nervousness a little bit more.
c. I think you are doing a good job, and the class is not confusing at all. As we all said in class, if someone is confused they can always talk to you or a classmate. You always encourage us to do our work and you also send out frequent reminders about the deadlines.
d. My attitude towards this class is getting more positive from day to day. I have to admit that I did not like the class at all in the beginning, but that’s mainly because I hate giving speeches. But with each and every day, I feel like I am getting a little bit more comfortable. What helps me a lot is my student planner. I always write down my deadlines or what I have to do for the class. I also like to write down good tips and advices that I receive from some of the videos.
